Morris Mini Cooper S MK1 970cc 1964 The second of two Mini Coopers that have come from the same collection and is very much the "Jewel in the Crown".
This exceedingly rare Mini is a Series 1 Cooper S, equipped with the "homologation special" 970cc engine to make it eligible for the 1 litre class in international competition.. The 970 S was a very low volume production model, much lower than even BMC claimed at the time. Aimed at the 1000cc class for racing and rallying, 1000 had to be built to qualify for homologation and they never got as far as 970! Homologated for competition use from April 1964, production sort of started in June 1964 but an ongoing shortage of crankshafts meant that by the end of July they had only built twenty four.
This matching numbers car has been in a private collection in Germany for over thirty years and has received a full nut and bolt restoration to an exceptional standard during that time. The car is virtually unused since restoration, with a mere 50 miles having been covered.
This truly exceptional and highly prized Mini is described by the vendor as excellent in all respects and is superbly presented. The car comes with a Heritage certificate and will undergo an MOT test prior to being offered at auction today.
Rarely does a 970cc Cooper S come to the market, making this an exceptional opportunity to acquire such a fine example.
