Ford Capri MK1 302 Cubic Inch V8 Recreation A very special machine!! 1977 Here at ECCA we have established as reputation of being different offering classic vehicles that have not been on the market before vehicles that are different from the norm alongside all the other more main stream Classics. We have had Porsche Tractors 5.3 V12 Trikes a replica Le Mans car amongst others buy now we bring you Capri or not Capri a very famous and multimulti award winning car built by its longtime owner Mr Geoff Phillips. It is stunning and the pictures do not do it justice!
Geoff started with the chassis made from 3.5 x 1.5 inch steel box section incorporated a full roll cage then using the exact dimensions of a MK1 Ford Capri he stretched the frame 14 in front of the bulkhead to allow the fitting later of a full house 5 litre Ford V8 engine. Over this he fitted hand crafted glass fibre panels to replicate the MK1 Capris all but the doors which are original Ford items. The finished shell received a very expensive coat of Mid Chrome yellow two pack acrylic with the eye catching graphics you see today.
Fully modified Triumph GT6 front suspension and steering with adjustable coil over shock absorbers. Up the back a Modified Jaguar MK2 back axle fully located with an adjustable 4 link system and Koni coil over shock absorbers takes care of that end. While braking is courtesy of 4 pot front brake callipers with vented discs rears are solid disc items using Jaguar callipers to provide the hand brake as well as stopping power. The system is a full dual circuit with a brake servo for extra assistance and uses Aeroquip hoses and silicone fluid throughout.
The engine is a Ford 302 Cubic inch motor fully rebuilt using the best available at the time including but not limited to Alluminium big valve heads competition cam shaft with roller rockers 600 cfm Holley carb on an Eldebrock performance manifold and Cermakrome coated Black Jack headers. Whew! Cooling for all this comes from a crossflow radiator fitted with electric fans and water pump. The gearbox is a Ford 3 speed auto with a B&M TransPak and Holeshot convertor.
The attention to detail does not stop there as you look inside and see the upholstery has all been hand trimmed in Scottish leather and tweed complete with a full dash board quick release steering wheel and reclining seats. Full instrumentation is taken care of by a set of recalibrated Smiths gauges and there are even electric windows. In car entertainment if you ever want to not hear the noise this car makes is provided by an Alpine head unit and infinity speakers. The car was completed and registered by DVLA as New on the 26th of October 1977.
This was not a labour of love more an obsession. One that has resulted in the finished article being featured in motoring magazines throughout Europe and winning more than 250 trophies at the top shows in Scandinavia Europe and the UK. But what really marks this car out is that it was driven to every one of those shows this was not a Trailer Queen and even today all these years on it is still in very good over all condition and is complete with a current MOT until 29/10/2017. Geoff also has every MOT from first registration. The engine oil and filter were changed religiously every 3000 miles and in fact have just been done so ready for its new owner. Geoff reports that the engine trans rear axle are in excellent condition as is the interior. Exterior is put as very good as apparently it has a minor mark or two! Mileage is now 39000 there are no known faults drives very well and is now only for sale due to his increasing age and lack of use.
How do you value something like this? It is a totally one of car that once more spot lights the depth of engineering you can find in garages and sheds throughout the UK. All Geoff asks that it goes to a good home so do we. Thanks Geoff from all the petrol heads out there.
PS. Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures that do not do thiscar justice but they were taken from real photos. ECCA
