Lot number: 196
MG Y Series Stored in a dry barn for 40+ years! 1952 Back in the early seventies a fresh faced 15 year old lad thought it would be a jolly good idea to buy himself a car to do up and by the time he was old enough drive. Well as we all know good idea at the time but at that age things soon change suffice to say nothing was done more than parking it in his parents barn and that is where it has stayed ever since until now 40 odd years later. So not a Barn Find as he knew it was there more of a Barn Stored and the realisation that he would never get round to doing anything with it! After a successful and enjoyable day at our last Auction the decision was taken to give someone else the chance to save this lovely old English car so here it is.
UMG 810 is a 1953 MG Model Y and comes complete with its original buff log book. The registration number has not been allocated to another car according to the DVLA so the new owner should have no problem claiming the number as the original for the car but this is something they will have to do.
As you can see time has not been too unkind to the car. The vendor says that the exterior has surface rust but is structurally sound with good running boards etc. There is rust in the front doors around the both the boot and spare wheel lids but is more or less complete. Underneath the car is very solid.
The interior is complete but will need a full retrim as it is pretty moth eaten and the roof lining has long since come down.
Engine condition is unknown but he was told it had been reconditioned when he bought it and the Duckhams used at the time still appears green in colour! The engine does turn with the starting handle so is not seized. Obviously the condition of the transmission is also unknown but it is all there. This goes for the rest of the mechanical and the electrical items on the car present but condition unknown. The car does roll quite easily so the brakes are not locked on. Tyres? Well they are on the wheels and keeping the rims of the floor but that is about all they are good for.
This car has to be considered as a full restoration project but one that has not been offered on the market for 40 years so a real find in its own rights!
